    Operation Java - Cyber Squad

    Java is one of the most prevailant languages on the globe today. Not to be confused with JavaScript, this general-purpose language was designed to be easier to use than C++, and 90% of the Fortune 500 companies have used Java to develop desktop apps and website backend systems. Come along with HackLab as we show you the ropes, through a series of 'Missions' designed to put you on the path to becoming a Java Jedi!

    GameMaker Gateway

    …Error detected…Contamination levels at 99%...Initiating purge protocolJoin Hacklab as we delve into one of the most popular game engines for new developers, GameMaker Studio. We will use GameMaker's easy and intuitive GML coding language. Learning aspects such as basic code functionality, the GML library, Inheritance, user-interface design and implementation, as well as consolidating valuable skills such as level and mechanical design as we create a fun and simple wave-based survival game.

    Age: 8-16 years
    Level: Level 2 This is an intermediate course and is only recommended for children who have completed 3 or more Level 1 courses in the chosen discipline (Coding, Digital Arts .. etc.). These courses take a more in depth look at the software/tools used and require sstudents to have a basic knowledge of them before attending. Experience with general computer literacy students should be able to type confidently and navigate around the operating system unsupervised.

Come with HackLab as we take two days to show you how to create the retro-look 8-Bit artwork prevalent in so many classic arcade games. We'll help you to create a game-ready sprite sheet filled with different images you can embed into any digital project to make it look rad!

  • Drop a Beat

    We delve into the realms of Mozart, MetaeX, Skrillex and Fatboy Slim. We drop some fat beats using the incredible SonicPi, a program which turns your code into sweet, sweet music live and in real time. Using the Ruby language, we explore musical scales, tempo and timing, composition and chords. Once we have a decent melody going, we dive into variables and threads by adding a chocolatey bassline and sampling a rapturous drum loop to create your own personal nightclub anthem, movie theme or game.

  • Intro to 3D Printing & Design

    3D Printing is an amazing breakthrough in manufacturing and prototyping, and it’s only getting better every day. Think about it: the International Space Station has a 3D printer now, so that instead of having to send a piece of equipment up on the next rocket (which costs millions of pounds), NASA just have to email it to them! Incredible! We’re going to get you set up on TinkerCAD, an online design program that is intuitive to use, friendly for all and supports any 3D printer on the market.

We can loan you one of our top spec laptops to complete your project, complete with a mouse, a screen...even a keyboard! Just make sure you give it back at the end (without any crumbs in it!) We recommend that you bring a flashdrive with you to save your work and take it home.
